Paranormal phenomena are things that lie outside explanation of everyday scientific terms.

Ghosts of chess players past

Is there chess after death? A weird experiment to substantiate reincarnation was devised in 1985 by Dr. Wolfgang Eisenbeiss at the Swiss Institute of Parapsychology. A paranormal game between Korchnoi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Korchnoi) and the spirit of Maroczy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geza_Maroczy) slogged on by mail for eight years. The conduit for White's moves was Robert Rollins, a medium who claimed Maroczy's spirit guided his hand on paper, a technique known as automatic writing. "Maroczy was actually able to enter my body and move my arm. I can't play chess and never even liked the game, but when he plays through me I'm one of the best in the world. It's eerie," alleged Rollins.I'm reminded of that old saw about a guy who was in jail for striking a happy medium. The game took so long because the medium moved only when the spirit moved him. This great hokum was reported in The National Enquirer decades ago and was revived last year in a lead article for the British journal of Psychical Research. The authors claimed that private details provided by Maroczy through automatic writing were confirmed by research to be 94 percent accurate.Maroczy died at age 81 in 1951. He was one of the world's best players in his heyday at the turn of the 20th century. Hungary issued a stamp in his honor in 1974. "Maroczy plays in an outmoded style that nobody uses today, but he's tough," said Korchnoi. Yet White had little hope after botching the opening. The real Maroczy faced the Winawer Variation four times, choosing 4 exd5 twice and 4 Nge2 twice instead of the uncharacteristic 4 e5. Correct was 12 Ng5! Nxe5 13 f4 Rxg5 14 fxg5 N5g6 15 h4. And 14 Ng5! was far stronger than entering an inferior and tedious endgame in this ghostly encounter.

Apparition of a girl

Paranormal phenomena photo

Taken in the Australian outback by the Reverend R.S. Blance at Corroboree Rock, located 100 miles from Alice Springs. The photo was taken in 1959.According to the legends of the site, the place was known for being a spot where the Aborigine tribesmen carried out terrible ceremonies in the past. According to the minister, there was no other human activity in the area at the time the photo was taken.

The Jersey Devil

The legend of the Jersey Devil dates back to about 1735, by most accounts, in Leeds Point, New Jersey. A Mrs. Leeds, the story goes, upon discovering that she was pregnant for an unlucky thirteenth time said that the child might just as well be a devil. Folklore says that this prophecy came true, and that Mrs. Leeds gave birth to a horrific creature with a horse's head and bats wings. Ever since, the legend goes, the creature has been haunting the pine barrens of New Jersey.
No one takes the legend seriously, of course, but the Jersey Devil has been blamed over the years for a number of mysterious livestock deaths and eerie cries in the darkness. And the first sighting in the 20th century occurred in 1909 when a Pennsylvania postmaster allegedly saw the glowing monster flying over the Delaware river. Less than a month later, the flying creature was spotted by a policeman in Burlington, New Jersey. A few days later, a woman in Philadelphia claimed to have seen a similar monster in her backyard. And that evening it was seen by two more police officers in Salem, New Jersey, and the next night by a fisherman. Note their collective paranormal descriptions compared to chupacabras:
a ram-like head with curled horns
long, thin wings (other accounts reported short wings)
four short legs, the hind ones being longer than the forelegs
walks on its back legs and holds up two short front legs with paws on them
glowing eyes
a head like a dog and face like a horse
alligator-like skin
able to breathe fire
about three feet high (some described it as much larger)
hoof-like feet
one witness described it as looking like a winged kangaroo
another called in monkey-like

There are distinct differences in the descriptions, but there are also many interesting similarities.
Although the Jersey Devil is alleged to have been seen over the years, none are taken as seriously by researchers as the 1909 sightings.

El Chupacabra

The mystery of El Chupacabra (The goat sucker) has been with us since the early 1990's, when a number of goats in Puerto Rico were found drained of blood. El Chupacabra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra) is perhaps one of the strangest paranormal cryptids around due to a number of things. Firstly, its method of feeding where it drains all the blood of its prey leaving just two small puncture wounds.Their has also been rare instances when its prey internal organs are also missing, as though they have been turned to liquid and drained along with the blood. Although thousands of livestock have been killed in this manner only a handful of sightings have occurred. The most common description is that of a 3-5 foot biped that looks strikingly simillar to the grey aliens, except for a row of spines along its back, glowing eyes and fangs. There has of course been some sighting that are completely different, for instance some describe a more large cat or dog like creature that are furless or have spines. Other oddities about the creature is that it can fly or at least glide short distances, and that it can give off a sulphuric like stench. The mystery of El Chupcabras originates from Puerto Rico, where even after about 15 years the creatures name strikes fear into many of its inhabitants. But it seems that the goat suckers attacks are now not limited to Puerto Rico, as much of South America as well as the southern USA have had visits by El Chupacabra. So it seems it could be multiplying whatever it may be.What I and many other people want to know is whatis El Chupacabra, and where does it come from? Their are a number of theories, the most common being that it is some kind of alien. This would explain the fact it bears no resemblance to any earthly creature be it past or present. Plus during the 1970's at the time of a spate of UFO sighting there were reported cattle deaths simillar to those of EL Chupacabra. This earlier creature was named the Moca vampire, could they be one and the same. Another idea is that it is an experiment gone wrong an either escaped or was released by the US goverment. But do we really have the technology to create such a creature, especially when it has only been recently when we have even been able to clone and gene-splice to an extent.Or could El Chupacabra be something more natural such as a known or unknown animal, if so it would be the most bizarre animal to have ever evolved on Earth. Many skeptics tend to lean toward it being a pack of wild dogs or an escaped big cat, these would stand up better it the inflicted wounds bore any semblance to an attack by such animals. The least probable theory proposed by skeptics is that El Chupacabra has been invented by the Puerto Ricans to increase tourism, as i doubt they would kill there own live-stock to fuel the story, also if this was the case surely someone would have broken there silence by now.Whatever El Chupacabra is it would be an amazing discovery, unfortunatly due to the nature of the beast it makes it an extremely difficult task in even knowing where to begin. This is not helped by the number of theories surrounding it, bringing togther both ufology and cryptozoology but neither side seem to get they far in there investigations except for maybe a new attack on report, or a new vague sighting.

Haunted Essex

Having lived in Essex most of my life, I decided to do a little bit of research into alleged haunted areas of Essex. I first of all started by scanning internet sites such as the Paranormal Database, to try and locate area's close to home. I found that Danbury Common near Chelmsford has got reports of the Ghosts of Roman soldiers being spotted there. Mersea Island is also supposed to be Haunted by Roman soldiers. Colchester Castle's Dungeon has got a report of A man who was scared half to death when he attempted to stay a night there. Legend has it that a prisoner fell to his death trying to climb a rope to get to his dinner which was placed on a higher ledge by the guard. His ghost is said to remain. Anyway, After I had gathered a list of a few places to visit, Myself and My friend Paul decided to set off on a mini investigation. First we payed a night time visit to Hadleigh Castle near Southend. While Paul waited in the car I took my night vision digital video camera and touch and scalled the hill upto the castle ruins. The weather was wet and miserable and very windy. I took into consideration that this being an outside investigation that there would be noises that I couldn't explain and with the rain falling all around me, I was right so I didn't jump to Paranormal conclusions. I felt very alone in the ruins of the castle and with the weather putting a very big damper on things, I decided to return to the car and we made our way home. On the next night we visited Mersea Island in the search for Roman ghosts. We drove around the Island for a while as a few of the witness statements that I had read involved drivers seeing the apparitions as they were driving across the strood onto or off the island. After having no luck on the Drive around we stopped the car in a layby and I got out for another little walk in the dark. As a safety precaution I wore I high vis vest (I was investigating ghosts, not trying to become one). I walked a short distance in the dark in one direction and then decided to go across the strood. So I went trapsing off along the pavement again. The weather was Bad again (tipical for Essex) and the wind was blowing a gale and the rain was just starting up again. Nothing paranormal was encountered so I turned back. Next day we paid a daytime visit to Hadleigh Castle and had a proper good look around. There is not as much left as would have hoped and the main tower was wrapped in plastic and scaffolding due to resteration work. So all in all I was quite dissappointed. I had found no paranormal evidence, But it doesn't stop there. I plan to visit a few more places this weekend and I am considering camping a whole night at Hadleigh Castle and on Mersea island a bit closer to the summer when it gets warmer. Nothing was found to be paranormal on the Digital stills photoes or Digital video that I recorded in both locations.

Phantom Plane Crashes

Phantom airplane crashes are a relatively recent paranormal phenomenon, but there have been several cases reported. The scenario usually goes something like this. Witnesses see a plane going down, often in flames. They hear the crash and feel the ground shake as the plane impacts. Sometimes smoke and flames are seen, and witnesses can smell spilled fuel. Upon investigation, however, no sign of a crash is evident. Not only is no wreckage ever found, but no record of a missing or delayed flight is catalogued. So what are these people seeing?
"Unusual Files" has gathered several of these mysterious reports from around the country. Here are the highlights:

1. Plane Vanishes Near Long Island
January 19, 1997
People in Westbrook, Connecticut were amazed Wednesday morning, January 15, 1997 when they heard that a single-engine plane dive toward the waters of Long Island Sound... and then vanish. According to the newspaper The Day, “The Coast Guard, state Department of Environmental Protection, two rescue helicopters, fire departments from Westbrook, Old Saybrook, Madison and Clinton, and some marine patrols and private boats searched 100 square miles after a man reported he had seen a plane dive into the water. Daniel Bowes of Meetinghouse Lane was having a cup of coffee at about 7:30 a.m. at West Beach on Salt Island Road when he saw a plane flying low over the water, according to Ralph Buck, a captain of the Westbrook Fire Department. He told authorities it looked as if the plane took a nose dive, though he didn’t see a splash, Buck said. No airport in the area reported any planes missing, according to state police Lt. Cliff M’Sadoques.” At 4 p.m., the Coast Guard called off the search. No trace of any aircraft was found.

2. Montana Mystery
April 6, 1956
Three women in the Ovando, Montana, area, about 50 miles northeast of Missoula, reported seeing an airplane trailing smoke and falling from it, objects looking like parachutes. A ranchwoman told officers she saw a “board-like object” fall from the plane. Sheriff Ed Barrow and a deputy, despite falling temperatures and four feet of snow, made a ground search, joined by a ski-equipped plane which flew over the designated area, but nothing was found. Two days later, there was a new hope when a boy living near Ovando reported an explosion he had seen on a hillside near his home. He described it as a “big explosion” with red and yellow flames. The time and general location given by the boy agrees with the stories told by the three women, officers said. Malmstrom AFB officials at Great Falls and Civilian and CAA authorities all agreed that no planes, military, commercial or private were missing. On Feb. 18, Carl Schirmer, coordinator of the Montana search and rescue team announced, “There is nothing warranting any further search. The Sheriff went up where the disturbance was reported to be seen and could not find a thing.”

3. Sighting, Screaming, But No Crash
August 13, 1976
Butler County, Ohio, deputies discontinued a search yesterday afternoon for a plane which reportedly had crashed in Reily Township near Imhoff and Indian Creek Roads late Wednesday night. Deputies said an amateur radio operator heard what he thought was a distress call from a plane believed to be flying from Oxford to Cincinnati about 11 p.m. About 1:45 a.m. yesterday, George Mosley, 1203 Azel Avenue, Hamilton, his son and two other boys became separated in the same area while coon hunting. During the separation the boys said they saw a white flash in the sky at treetop level, then heard screaming and a crash. Airports in Hamilton and Butler County had no record of any small craft filing a flight plan during those hours. Deputies used a plane and walked the area in search of a downed plane Wednesday night until fog set in on the Reily area. The search was continued yesterday morning and discontinued after nothing was found.

4. The Ghost Plane Incident
Jan. 6, 1956
Nov. 18, 1955. The first reports told of extensive search parties combing the mountainous region of Dark Hollow, Pennsylvania, looking for a plane believed crashed. The search began after Dale Murphy, civil defense coordinator of Cumberland County, said he received reports from ten GOC members of either hearing or seeing a plane, “probably in trouble,” flying about 1,000 feet. One spotter said she saw it go out of sight behind a hill, then heard something like an explosion. However, checks with various air control agencies failed to turn up any reports of either a plane missing or in trouble. Air-sea rescue planes were dispatched by Westover AFB in Massachusetts to aid ground crews in the search. The planes were requested after two flares were reported over a deep ravine in Dark Hollow. But, the aerial search by the Air Force and the Civil Air Patrol along with nearly 300 firemen, police, civil defense workers and volunteers found no trace of a crashed plane. But the persistence of flares renewed the searchers efforts. On the 20th, yellow flares were reported at 1:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. At 9:30 that night Murphy ordered sirens blown on all fire equipment in the region. Fifteen minutes later, another flare arched into the sky. Finally, on the 22nd Nov., the search was halted, and the “ghost plane” became a legend.

5. Mystery at Post 83
On November 29, 1996, the day after Thanksgiving, a Miami Township, Ohio, resident was unloading groceries from his car. As he walked into his house, something disruptive happened. “The ground shook, and my house vibrated,” commented the gentleman during an interview from his living room three weeks afterward. “It sounded like two concrete slabs crashing together. I could feel the shock of it. My windows and shades even rattled for about thirty seconds. I’d say that the sound shook the house between seven-thirty and eight,” the witness added. “About a half-hour or so later, the Franklin Police Department showed up checking around for an airplane crash.” Later that same night, a visit to the Franklin Police Department to inquire about the Franklin search with Lieutenant Massey revealed some conflicting information. “I believe your witness is mistaken,” Massey said. “Our search and rescue operation didn’t begin until 9:07 p.m., which was in response to the county-wide advisement of a possible plane down in the area.” The search and rescue mission was enormous, and was conducted by several police agencies from the Warren and Montgomery County areas. The search began at 8:49 p.m. when the Miami Township police headquarters received a telephone call from the FAA Flight Service Station located at the Dayton International Airport. Apparently, Rescue Coordination Services advised the Miami Township department of the detection of an ELT beacon (Emergency Locator Transmission) which had originated from an area two miles west of Dayton General Airport. Strangely, the ELT signal was not received locally, as would be expected, but rather, was detected by orbiting satellite. Once the rescue operation was enacted, the search crews raced into an area west – and then later south – of the Wright Brothers/South Dayton General Airport. The reasoning behind the initial change in the search locations is that the ELT signal was evidently changing position, appearing first approximately 15 miles to the northwest of the Wright-Brothers Airport, and then was strangely tracked to a distance of over two miles west of the airport. At 9:17 p.m., Springboro and Miamisburg units on foot began to detect the profuse smell of hot burning rubber. Strangely, a third location on State Route 741 is also where a second area resident complained of an explosive sound heard, also between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. No physical evidence is known to have been recovered that would indicate there was an aircraft emergency resulting in a crash, as no known debris has been found. The entire state of affairs regarding the mystery ELT signal, loud booming and crashing sounds heard by independent witnesses from two locations, the visual observation of an object with one red light, the uncertain chain of events at Post 83, the radar track announced to the police agencies by the Dayton International Airport, the smell of burning rubber, the subsequent denial of certain reporting procedures by the DIA which were later found to have occurred, the lack of log entries maintained by DIA operators, the subsequent inquiries as to how the calls were handled by C.A.P., and the involvement of Langley in announcing this to Flight Services are various issues that remain unresolved in this tangled, complicated drama.

Lobster Family

Grady Franklin Stiles, Jr., was born in Pittsburgh on July 18, 1937, the sixth in a long line of lobster-men (preceded by William Stiles, 1805-1888; Jacob Stiles, 1843-1932; Elisha Stiles, 1880-1935; and finally Grady Stiles, Sr., 1912-1988). Grady could not walk and used a wheelchair in public, but could crawl around on his incredibly powerful arms and could perform nearly any task using his "claws". He was married twice to Mary Teresa Herzog and once to Barbara Browning and had four children, two of whom, a boy and a girl, also had lobster-hands. When his eldest daughter Donna was engaged to marry a boy of whom Grady disapproved, Grady shot and killed the boy.
However, Grady escaped a prison sentence on the grounds that no prison was equipped to handle his disability. He was given fifteen years probation, and soon after the trial re-married Mary Teresa and continued to physically abuse his family. In 1992 Mary Teresa mentioned to Grady's son-in-law, a circus employee, that "something" needed to be done about Grady's abusive behavior. On November 29, 1992, he was shot to death while watching television in the family's trailer home. The killer was a neighbor, hired by Grady's son-in-law.
The surviving Stiles family members still call Gibsonton home. Cathy is married to carnival worker Tyrill Berry and is the mother of Misty, born in the early 1990s, who also has the lobster-claw condition (ectrodactyly). Grady III has a daughter, Sara, who does not have ectrodactyly. Cathy, Grady III and Misty still perform occasionally. Cathy has appeared in the films Sisters (1973), Tim Burton's Big Fish (2003) and Firecracker (2004) as well as in an episode of the series Carnivale.
Ectrodactyly literally means "monstrous fingers" and is generally a highly hereditary condition, as evidenced by the Stiles family, although it can occur spontaneously. The Bell family of Scotland has exhibited the trait for several centuries, supposedly as divine punishment for their ancestor's involvement in the execution of two innocent women accused of witchcraft. Accounts from Africa tell of an entire tribe, known as the Vadoma, who possess ectrodactyl or "ostrich" feet; however, these stories are very likely exaggerated and the "tribe" in question is but a single family. A contemporary celebrity with ectrodactyly is Bree Walker, a newscaster from California who appeared as the Scorpion Queen in the HBO series Carnivale.

Bosnian beast - unidentified animal found in 2001 in Bosnia.

In a case that seems more like an episode of the X Files than actual fact in the Balkans, former soccer player and trainer Damir Bradarac hit an animal with his car early Wednesday near the centre of Zenica, but when he got out of the car to look at what he had hit, it was like nothing he had ever seen before.
"It's about 21 inches long. On the ends of its legs it has amphibious palms with five fingers, very similar to humans, unusually long legs which veterinarians believe can serve for jumping, a long neck, keen eyes, a flat head," read the description in Jutarnje Novine Friday. The picture on the front page showed the strange creature's razory teeth to advantage as well.
Bradarac took the animal's body to veterinarians in Zenica, who were confused and told him nothing like it had ever been seen in the area. Zenica citizens were also concerned, because a "carnivorous animal" had been found in the centre of town. A Jutarnje team volunteered to take the corpse to Dr Rizah Avdić at the Veterinarian-Anatomy Department in Sarajevo. "When we came to the Veterinary Department, the porter at the entrance already knew we were coming. He only asked, 'Is that it?'" wrote one of the reporters.
Dr Avdić told the paper that the animal was male and that it could possibly be related to domesticated cats. "I can't say now what exactly it does, but I can say that I saw a similar animal before and that they live in our forests," he said. "Everything will be known tomorrow after the autopsy."
As for Bradarac, the discoverer of the animal, which he dubbed "the little dinosaur," he said he was curious to find out what it was. "I want to find out the truth... [so] that we know what kind of monsters are roaming our streets," he said. "I can't understand why the [respective] authorised institutions are not interested in this case." Bosnian paranormal phenomena.

The gravestone path

The winter was a long and hard one in the Britain of 1970, before the days of global warming, January would signify cold weather right across the country. Early one morning I had cleared a patch of snow in my tiny garden to put down food for the wildlife, an urgent knocking on my door showed and anxious looking old lady with a tiny Yorkshire terrier held tightly within her coat, and demanding to see the Exorcist.Inviting her into the warm, and asking her over a welcome hot cup of tea for her story, she began to pour out this amazing story. Her son was a parish gravedigger, these are a special breed of men who are often shunned for the work they do, yet their knowledge of the outdoors the changing seasons and who lives below ground in their graveyards, can be priceless to ghost hunters. The old lady told me that the little churchyard, where her son worked had sold off a part of the large old graveyard for a road widening scheme and for a small housing development. As the old defunct gravestones were cleared away, he had brought a load home and laid them down as her garden path, and on a visit there sure enough, you could read all the names of the long deceased all down the garden path to her washing line, the trouble was when you move these things about, you can disturb the dead, and they were expressing their anger in very strange ways.Since the laying of the pathway with the unwanted gravestones, she would hear strange noises, things would get moved and Trixie the Yorkshire terrier would be very unsettled at night. Now old people who live alone can report all these things, and they are actually more normal than paranormal, but in this instance I felt some examination was necessary, and was glad I did, because there were indeed memory traces and psychic residues from some long dead personalities, who were unhappy to have been disturbed, both in the garden and now in the home. The first thing was to call out a list of the names on the stones in prayer, consecrate the new ground for the stones, and to call for Gods blessings. This used to be called “a holding at bay ceremony”. Electrical problems have been documented in psychic movement right back to the complete system failures in Cairo at the death of Lord Caernarvon, but here were some baffling phenomena such as lights coming on and off all through the night, music coming from the player, the heating packing up, the doorbell ringing when no one was there and her reading glasses going missing and being found all over the house; she said this was all driving her potty. The next door neighbour’s said she was batty anyway, so it was difficult to assess how much was genuine, but I believe the general thrust of what she said, and asked if I could bring in a few spiritual colleagues in what is called a “rescue circle” and round up these lost souls and help them to their proper place, this is expert work and must not be attempted without expert training. But in the meantime however she went to the church and told the Vicar there about the ghostly goings on, and he was furious she had sought help from someone such as myself. In the old days people who thought for themselves were murdered by the Christian hierarchy, and even today freelance exorcists were not seen in a pleasant light,But the need for them has only been because of Church attitude that only regular church goers can get church help or use church facilities. The Vicar was not very knowledgeable or helpful and kept insisting that“This would not have happened if she had kept up her regular church going and bible reading class” but did pray with her in the house.Over the coming weeks the strange phenomena did die down,And trixie the terrier went back to sleeping in her basket, but I am convinced the situation existed which could have got a lot worse, with the souls of the dead getting increasingly angry.Flash photographs taken at night show several paranormal streaks and shapes which could possibly be spirit, and I accept this is open to interpretation. But for me there really were a lot of dead people in that house, who I am pleased to say are now back at rest.

Synchronicity today

Synchronicity was the term coined by Carl Jung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung) for what he termed “meaningful co-incidences”. This wonderful story appeared in the British press on October 28 2005. 87 year old Bob Michie was out for a drive in his 1954 “R” type Bentley saloon on a lonely country road, when for the first time the motorcar which has done 120,000 miles broke down. The car was towed to the nearest garage where mechanics diagnosed a broken rotor arm, which supplies the spark to the distributor. No-one had any idea where another could be obtained, then amazingly the mechanic flagged down an A.A patrol van, the mechanic joked to the patrol van driver, “you would not have a rotor arm for a 1954 Bentley in there would you mate” ? Incredibly the driver had had one on board for 28 years and within minutes the 51 year old Bentley was back on the road. Psychologist Carl Jung ( 1875-1961) believed there were no such thing as co-incidence and that at some level all things are linked, students of occultism, and Jung was one, use everyday signs and objects as signposts to information outside of the normal ranges of perception.Although most modern schools of psychology pooh-hooh these theories, primitive man and societies where man is in touch with the natural world, have always used these abilities to good effect. APOPHENIA this is the term for explaining away that there is nothing other than random circumstance at work, and that to suggest so is perhaps a signpost of mental illness, Some say that creativity and psychosis are linked, and dismiss the 3 primary categories of synchronicity, as developed by Jung and now used in every single divinatory school. AUGERY. No where is this more visible that in the science of Augury, where biblical prophets would read from the flight of birds, carrion crows and similar were seen as unlucky and dubbed “birds of ill omen” The prophet would section of a piece of sky to be read, by holding out his arms and meditating for birds to fly through this area, in Rome the Latin name of this section was “templum” from where we derive the term “template” And when worship moved into fixed buildings these became known as “temples”. Before a battle, only the army commander was allowed to predict the outcome. From the Latin terms, avis Bird and speciosee, we get the word “auspicious” and expert Graeme Donald tells us that “ a junior officers victory was said to have occurred- “under the generals auspices.” I will often demonstrate how this technique was used in medieval palmistry, and its application in modern psychology to the hand-print. Today synchronicity is around us all the time, emotionally, physically intellectually, In fact in every part of our lives, and we must make doubly sure we have time to look, and absorb its meanings.

Loch Ness Monster

One of the most famous paranormal Cryptids in history, the Loch Ness Monster, has intrigued both the general public and experts alike for decades. Loch Ness (http://www.visitlochness.net/) is the largest freshwater lake in the UK, at over 24 miles long and containing more water than all the other lakes in the rest of the British Isles combined. It is an enigmatic place, made more so by the considerable number of sightings over the years of what people describe as a large creature in the Loch. These descriptions vary, from a long snake like animal with humps, to a long-necked dinosaur like creature resembling a Plesiosaur. The aim of this article is to try and dispel some of the most common misconceptions regarding the Loch Ness Monster. It is not intended however at dispelling the idea that an unknown creature exists in Loch Ness, that determination will be left up to you.Myth: Nessie is a solitary animal, one of a kindIf the Loch Ness Monster exists, it cannot be alone. Any species requires a viable population in order to survive, a single animal could not have survived alone in the Loch for all this time, and sightings date back hundreds of years.Myth: Nessie was trapped in the Loch since prehistoric timesDuring the last ice age, Scotland was totally covered by a giant glacier. No large animal could survive being frozen in ice for thousands of years, if the Loch Ness Monster exists it certainly didn't get there this way.Myth: Nessie hides in a series of underground caverns beneath the LochNo maze of underground caverns have ever been found. In a recent BBC documentary about Loch Ness it was revealed that the type of rock which makes up the sides of the Loch is a type in which caves should not be able to form. It is highly unlikely that there is a large maze of caves under the Loch.Myth: Nessie is a PlesiosaurThis is a common theory put forward to explain what type of creature the Loch Ness Monster could be. The main problem with this idea is that Plesiosaurs breath air. If there was one in Loch Ness it would have to come to the surface every few minutes to breath. The frequency of sightings does not support this, if it were surfacing as much as this then it would be very easy to see on a regular basis. There's also the small problem that Plesiosaurs apparantly became extinct millions of years ago, and if by some miracle some have survived to the present day there would need to be a sizable population of them. Such a population of large air-breathing sea creatures would not have gone unnoticed.Myth: In 1934, a surgeon took the most convincing ever photograph of the monsterColonel Robert Wilson did indeed claim to have photographed the creature in 1934. His photograph was the most convincing ever of the monster, and remained so until quite recently. In 1993 however,it was revealed that the object in the water was actually a plastic head mounted on the top of a toy submarine. He certainly took the photograph, but what it shows is not the Loch Ness Monster. Will any of this stop people believing in the Loch Ness Monster ? Of course not, because whether or not it exists the legend of Nessie is world famous, and no matter what the skeptics say it won't stop the next visitor from glancing out over the Loch to see if they can catch a glimpse of that elusive creature.

Final your work.. post-mortem

Most ghosts are hopelessly vague, so much so that one wonders if you can accomplish anything at all in the afterlife. They appear and disappear transiently, leave us muffled and hard to understand EVPs, and for the life of them can't do anything on demand or repeatable to prove their existance beyond all shadow of a doubt. Of course, there are paranormal exceptions. Two resounding examples come in the form of mediums who have made contact with dead novelists and composers. This in itself isn't out of the ordinary, famous people are allegedly channeled all the time. But this duet of cases stands above the crowd in that actual artistic work resulted from the contact in such a way that the medium should not have been capable of faking. The first is the famous Mrs. Rosemary Brown (http://www.adam.com.au/bstett/PaBrown104.htm) who died in 2001. Early in life she had been visited by the ghost of Franz Liszt (http://www.d-vista.com/OTHER/franzliszt.html). At the time she had no idea who this white haired man in the flowing black cassock was until she saw a picture of him years later. At the age of seven he told her that he would make her a famous musician one day, before dissappearing for decades. He showed back up unexpectedly in 1964, and literally began releasing new compositions through her. He was soon joined by the spirits of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Chopin and others. Some of them dictated notes directly to her, others controlled her hands on the piano and she wrote the notes down. Often, she couldn't even play the compositions as they were beyond her skills as a musician, but as she got older her piano playing markedly improved. She claimed this was because Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Liszt had been tutoring her on the piano! The consensus from the music world was, mostly, that the compositions bore a strong resemblance to the works of the composers. Some even stated that the compositions couldn't be faked without years of training, which she clearly never had. Some of the pieces were simple, but others were apparently very complex. In any case, Mrs. Brown was either a very talented composer herself, or she really was in contact with the spirits of a host of deceased composers. The other outstanding example is that of Mrs. J. H. Curran of St. Louis, Missouri who in 1913 made contact through a ouija board with a spirit calling herself Patience Worth. Claiming to have lived in 17th century America and killed by indians, the spirit of Patiences Worth dictated to Mrs. Curran a number of novels from a variety of different historical periods in multiple different literary styles. From a period novel written in medieval English, which Mrs. Curran had no way of studying, to her novel "Hope Trueblood" set in the 19th century which recieved critical acclaim even from reviewers that had no idea that the novel had been dictated by a spirit.
